Dude, relax. I suggested no such thing. I recommended it. You can create a decent
pdf from a scanned photocopy of a fax if you have the right tools. And, you can do
things on the cheap, or do them the right way. The text is reflowing. It does that
when you pdf from Word. Typeset the book for the man and be done with it. Let's
leave the little personal digs out of this forum if possible. We're all just trying
to help.

I've avoided responding to this thread hoping someone with Word 98 would
have the answer as I'm using Office 2004 (in spite of Microsoft's goofy
ads).

Since I am a designer myself, I like using professional page layout programs
whenever possible. But to suggest that one has to use one of these programs
to make a good PDF from a Word doc is bad advice.

The correct solution is to determine what steps the person is taking to make
the PDF. So, you have a Word document. Specifically, what steps do you take
to make the PDF?

Regarding software choices, Word 98 is six years old. You may want to
investigate upgrading.

To solve your immediate problem, however, if you'd like to send me privately
the table of contents, and the first chapter of your book (in both Word and
PDF format), I'd be happy to look at it for you. Naturally, this offer is
pro bono (gratis). You can make the PDF from the revised pages in your Word
doc. Sometimes this is the easiest way to find a quick answer to a problem,
rather than trying to draw straws out of a container of sharp needles.

Stan,

We create 30 or more "e-books" from printed books source files (FrameMaker)
a month and we strip out the running heads and delete the page numbers from
the ToC, among many other things, including deleting blank pages. Creating
links from the ToC to the chapters and also creating bookmarks within the
chapters makes the pdf well suited for web viewing. It's also best if you
break up the book into separate chapter files so the individual pdf file
size is smaller. This helps the files load quicker into Reader. As long as
you have all the files in one folder on your ftp site all the links and
bookmarks will work fine.

If your text is reflowing from Word to PDF and you want the book to appear
exactly the same as the printed version without dividing the chapters, I
would suggest having it typeset using a professional typesetting program
such as FrameMaker/In Design or Quark and then pdf'd with Acrobat 6 using
the web distiller setting.

<plug>Of course, for a nominal fee I just happen to provide such a
service.</plug>

Subject: [PDF-Basics] re material appearing in different page

Hello: I just subscribed and have a question of my own which I have been
unable to solve.

I have authored a book which has been published in regular book form and I
want to offer it also as an ebook. Unfortunately, every time I convert it
to PDF, the results are somewhat mixed. as an example, the pages are
numbered, with the table of contents show each chapter at a certain page,
when it is in PDF many of the pages are changed as to location of content
and appear on different pages. obviously, if a table of contents shows the
chapters on page -- then it should also appear the same when converted or re
opened in pdf. Can you tell me if I have to acquire different software? I
am presently using Word 98, acrobat 5 and reader. thank you. Stan Long
