Zapft dingbats font is one of the 14 base fonts included in acrobat (and other adobe programs).
It USED to be included with Acrobat - that is no longer the case with Acrobat 6. And it was only included LOCAL to Acrobat - NOT installed in the OS.
It has NEVER been included with other Adobe apps.
I have been using Illustrator to open PDF files for at least 10 years so I could add few things to the file that are not possible in the original format (Wordpro).
Just because YOU have been lucky doing something does NOT make it right!
Illustrator is NOT a PDF editor (as Dov noted). There are MANY things in PDF that Illustrator can't handle (the most relevant in this context is embedded fonts).
I do this because I edit a newsletter that is printed on paper using Macintosh of my printer. I work on a pc. The passage through Illustrator is important for me because I can render the file as "outline" as to not have font problems.
If you embedded the fonts in the PDF, you wouldn't have font problems AND you wouldn't need to "outline" the fonts.
