I've also been using illustrator for fixing font problems, but it's not ok for long automated publications. Better not to use some of these problem fonts at all, or else use Fontographer to generate a new font, but I'm not so clued up on that.

Subject: Re: [PDF] Acrocat 6 and Zapft dingbat font

Hello,

Zapft dingbats font is one of the 14 base fonts included in acrobat (and other adobe programs). I have been using Illustrator to open PDF files for at least 10 years so I could add few things to the file that are not possible in the original format (Wordpro). I do this because I edit a newsletter that is printed on paper using Macintosh of my printer. I work on a pc. The passage through Illustrator is important for me because I can render the file as "outline" as to not have font problems. I have been doing this until I run now on the Zapft dingbat problem.
I am trying now to layout the newsletter in Quark and produce a PDF. I assume that my printer could make plates from PDF? If not, opening the file on Quark Mac would run again into font problems...

Hello,

I use acrobat to transfer wordpro files to illustrator for further work on the file. Each time I upgrade to a different version of acrobat, for instanse 5, the zapft dingbat doesn't appear on illustrator. I solved this problem when moving to acrobat 5, by probably forcing the font to be embedded in the file, but I am not sure that was the fix.
Now moving to acrobat 6, the problem persists and embedding didn't' solve the problem.
Any suggestion?

Sincerely,

(1) Unless you actually have ITC Zapf Dingbats installed on your system (in your fonts directory or via ATM), Distiller cannot embed the font. ITC Zapf Dingbats is NOT included with Acrobat 6.

(2) Note that Adobe Illustrator is NOT, repeat NOT, repeat yet again NOT a general editor of PDF files. The only PDF files that can safely opened by Adobe Illustrator are those PDF files saved by Adobe Illustrator itself with the "save editability" option checked. In other cases, graphic elements and/or other aspects of your PDF file may be permanently lost or modified by simply opening and subsequently saving a PDF page in Adobe Illustrator!
