Regarding your question (in answerto my question) about why I need to save in .AI (Illustrator format) is because my Client wants to save his PDF & Word Docs in that particular format which also permits saving different data like text, images, shading and borders on separate layers.
First off, .AI files are really "extended" PDF documents, in that they are standard PDF files with private data known ONLY to Illustrator (or other Adobe applications).
Second, I am not sure what you mean by "shading and borders". Are you talking about smooth shading (aka gradients)? Are you talking about things like shadows? For borders, do you mean paragraph borders? Table Cell areas? What?
This .AI output is meant to be finally imported into a Document Management software called HotDocs
HotDocs doesn't support native .ai files - it doesn't know what to do with teh private data (AFAIK).
It does, however, support native Word files.
where data (like the text, for instance in particular) could be updated/changed if required when such a need arises.
I would be quite surprised to see a DMS change text in a .AI file.
I hope this makes my need a bit more clearer to understand.
Nope, actually makes it murkier :(.
