1. I would firstly ensure your RIPs (or your vendors RIPs) are configured correctly.

You might find that the data inside the PDF is being changed by a custom setting inside the RIP. Download the PDF/X Overprint stamp from Global Graphics: http://www.globalgraphics.com/pdfx/pdfxwfv.html

This can be sent down to the RIP and providing all 4 crosses appear upon output then you can put this to one side. Otherwise, if the RIP does not conform then it needs to be configured correctly. Full details are available in the HTML link above.

====================

If the above test does pass then it is down to the PDF itself

=====================

2. As per Peter's instructions - ensure the 'Overprint Preview' option is turned ON within Adobe Acrobat 5 (VIEW menu) or Acrobat 6 (ADVANCED menu)

3. If you like, as per Paulo's advice - set up Enfocus Pitstop to enforce particular action lists regarding particular overprint and knockout rules based upon either black, white or variations of these inks/colours.

Cheers,

Jon

Subject: [PDF] Trouble with type Knocking out!!

The PDF list is a service provided by PDFzone.com | http://www.pdfzone.com

Good Day!

I work for a major newspaper publishing company, and we receive a
large
percentage of our ads as camera-ready PDFs, usually distilled with
Distiller
settings we have provided for our customers. 90% of these ads arrive and
run
fine, but we've been experiencing a truly random problem with type failing
to knock out consistently. For example, we'll receive an ad with yellow or
red type, with a black drop shadow - but the drop shadow overprints the
colored type. The PDF, in most cases, will look fine on screen, but will
proof incorrectly, and consequently separate to film incorrectly. These
files usually come from Quark, but not consistently. We will also find
this
problem on only some type within an given PDF, or even within words (at
character level.

    Anyone else heard of this, in this seemingly random fashion? Any
solutions?
