Fonts are basically vector graphics which means their resolution isn't dependent upon
dots per inch (dpi) necessarily. Vector graphics by nature require less "room", as
far as memory is concerned, to be displayed correctly. 1 text/type character is more
or less one byte. Unless it's a two-byte font, but that's another discussion, anyway,
it takes 1024 bytes, or characters, to make 1 Kilobyte. Another 1024 Kb to equal 1
Megabyte. If you're dealing with dpi resolution it requires more "room", or more
bytes or Kb or even Mb (depending on the size) to display the same character as an
image than it does as true text. You can make the text letter "Z" 8 points or 800
points and it'll still take up pretty much the same "room" or size regarding bytes.
The same "Z" as an image would go from less than 1 Kb at 8 points and balloon up to 10
Mb at 800 if you're resolution is set at 266 Press resolution. Just for one letter.
Shocking isn't it. Of course all my numbers haven't be!
en scientifically calculated so save the math corrections for the Algebra forum. I'm
just using generalizations and estimates as examples. If I've made an error in my
explanation I welcome any additional, relevant information.

I have a scanner. The software creates pdf files. I found out by
accident recently these are no more than graphic files combined with a
file extension of pdf.

Something came up last week in which I needed to scan doc. The output
file was so big & I was not happy with the file size. I recreated file
with a word processor pgm.

I do have a pgm that will convert any doc to pdf. But I don't understand
why when I create a doc from a wordprocessor that the pdf file is much
smaller than if it where scanned. I have played around with scanner &
know about reducing DPI settings so file size is smaller & do it in black
& white. But I don't understand why from a wordprocessor the output size
is much smaller. Does anyone have any experience in this area?

Thank you all in advance for replying.
