Paul,
I agree with your assessment. I think you have stated the situation accurately.
You can "make" Acrobat 6 display like previous versions by setting the custom resolution to 72 ppi.
This doesn't help much though if you are trying optimize the display of PDF files for users whose computers you have no control over.

Lynn,

Just to clarify I think this is actually very significant. Versions 1-5 of
Acrobat always displayed at 72dpi this gave us a cross platform format in
that an image created at 100% 72dpi would appear smaller on a pc in terms of
screen mm which is correct. Now I have just checked distiller 6 and the PC
distiller defaults have been changed for "Screen" to downsample to 100dpi
whereas on a Mac its still 72.

This will result in

All legacy pdf's created on either platform, off which there must be
millions, will appear larger on a PC with V6 and any 72dpi downsampled
images will be lower quality. As will all future pdf's created with V6
defaults on a Mac. Furthermore files created on a pc with the new defaults
will be larger.

Not really a step forward I would say. I have now scrapped the idea of
moving to V6.

Paul
