I agree with your assessment. I think you have stated the situation accurately.
You can "make" Acrobat 6 display like previous versions by setting the custom resolution to 72 ppi.
This doesn't help much though if you are trying optimize the display of PDF files for users whose computers you have no control over.

Versions 1-5 of Acrobat always displayed at 72dpi this gave us a cross platform format in that an image created at 100% 72dpi would appear smaller on a pc in terms of screen mm which is correct. Now I have just checked distiller 6 and the PC distiller defaults have been changed for "Screen" to downsample to 100dpi whereas on a Mac its still 72.

All legacy pdf's created on either platform, off which there must be millions, will appear larger on a PC with V6 and any 72dpi downsampled images will be lower quality. As will all future pdf's created with V6 defaults on a Mac. Furthermore files created on a pc with the new defaults will be larger.
Not really a step forward I would say. I have now scrapped the idea of moving to V6.
