Remember that PDF is NOT a text file format - it is a structured binary format. Make sure that you are getting line ending and byte counting issues correct, esp. in the XRef.
The next stage is to apply some right hand justification to some of the columns of text and the only way I think I can achieve this is to have a matrix of all the character widths for the type 1 fonts, and from this calculate the appropriate starting position for the string.
That is correct - that's how it's done!
Could someone tell me where I can get hold of the character width tables?
For what fonts? The Base14? They are published in a number of locations...
