The PDF Spec is a good place to start.

These images you want to switch, are they all from the same source?  If so,
you'll be able to cut some corners.  Maybe even down to the point where you
can "cheat" the spec in a number of places.

Are the images all the same size, resolution, etc?  The more similarities
there are, the more you can cheat.

I'd appreciate more background in what you're trying to accomplish.
