I don't think that will work in the general case, which is why I suggested decompressing. It may work in certain cases, but I believe GIF files may start LZW with a code length of less than 8 bytes, while PDF's LZWDecode always starts with a code length of 8 bytes. Actually that doesn't sound right, but I think it's something like that - ignore my terminology, a 7-bit GIF won't do.
