There is no way to do this reliably for any browser on all OS platform using any PDF viewer...
You can do it on Windows with IE and Acrobat by using COM-specific stuff, but not too much more than that...
Macromedia documented the means of detecting Flash,
Again, only for IE on Windows and the Macromedia Flash player. If I'm on Mac OS, or in Opera (for example), or using a 3rd party player, their solution doesn't owrk.
