For instance, there is UCS-2, which is 16-bit Unicode. Or UTF-8 which is escaped Unicode, with most Japanese characters occupying 3 bytes. Or Shift-JIS, which is the native encoding of Windows and Mac Japanese systems, with all Japanese characters occupying 2 bytes. And many more.
