First, you don't have to use BMC/EMC markers - they aren't required. They don't hurt anything (other than file size) though...

That's a good question!
Each version of Acrobat 4->5->6 has different positioning code for text w/in a field - so even if you exactly match the appearance for one version, it may be "a little off" for other versions.
The only way to get close is to do what you've done - let Acrobat generate them and then compare and understand.
