Hi Jim,
Sharpness is not an absolute measure but a perception, ie if the image from
a lens displays a very smooth and uniform out of focus area then the
apparent sharpness of the in focus area may be greater than an image from
a lens which has a measurably higher resolution but causes distraction and
confusion in image background. So resolving power isn't directly related to
resolving power but more so to the overall optical thumb-print (combination of
all the commonly measured and non-measured optical parameters) of the
lens.
