It really isn't too hard to push things beyond the limits of your light meter--
usually around EV1. a full set of extension tubes on a 50 mm macro lens
will take you to around 2:1 maginfication -- and require a 9 f stop
compensation
which will easily press the lower EV limit of your light meter if you are using
available light.
What is unclear to me is to what extent the light meter remains functional when
exposures are dropped below the advertized lower limit. My impression is that
they continue to work, but I am unfamiliar with 'how well'
