Hi folks,

I did not know there has been an incredible international war being fought
over this subject, and realized that there was no place for our tribe to
muddy the water further when I walked into this :-))

I just wish to focus on camera issue and someday when the peace returns to
our planet, perhaps someone could answer.

It seems (to me) that some camera mfrs do spec down some models, taking out
some features from the original Japanese models. They seem to do so
particularly on US export models. Examples are ZX-5n (vs. MZ-3?) and some
Canon models with eye control features eliminated. I said that this might
be because the mfrs regard the US market as price sensitive (with no
derogatory sense for Americans as I know they have purchasing power, and I
am sure these decisions are made jointly with Americans
themselves--importers etc--). Someone said that's because Americans tend to
regard "camera" more as a record keeping, family snap equipment (which only
needs P&Ss to do) which is probably closer to the truth, analogy being
luxurious boat owners tend to use cheap P&Ss, thus proving that it has
nothing to do with the bank account (or maybe they have their F5s etc
stashed out, fearing splash etc :-). Yet another person (JoMac, was it?)
said that it has something to do with the price point setting by importers,
which is probably true too. What I really do not understand is why they
(mfrs or importers) do this as the difference in price is presumably so
small and the market has an ability to gobble these up (I could be wrong as
I am not supposed to be any better than market researchers). In case of eye
control, the difference in retail level price is perhaps around $50 or so
but it could make a difference, I do not know. There are enough consumer
purchasing power in the US that can snap up so many F5 and1v and all that,
yet they still do this. I am sure it has nothing to do with the lack of
purchasing power. The fact that Canada is bringing in MZ-3 and apparently
doing well is another mystery. If Canada can sell MZ-3 which is nothing
more than a souped up ZX-5(n), just the sheer size of the US market can snap
up more of those. Mystery.

I was just wondering :-)

Cheers,

Ken
