You have to use the aperture ring. You can only set the aperture using the
camera if you are using lenses that have an "A" aperture setting (and you
must also set it to A).

Spot metering and center-weighted will work with M lenses - they're the
only ones the body will let you select when you have an M lens attached. 
Matrix metering will not work - for this you need A lenses as well. 

Both of the above also apply to the original K (not KA) lenses.
