I definitely prefer #1.   In fact I looked at #2 first, and thought
'what would I have done differently?', and ended up pretty close to
what you have as #1.  The one thing I'd have tried to do, as well,
is to lose some of the ground in the foreground, if possible, by
going for a slightly higher vantage point and/or moving forward
slightly.
