Paul,
I've got an MZ-50 also. Seems like you COULD shoot in manual mode, but
manually override the automatic ASA setting, right? For instance, load
ASA800 film, but then manually set your ASA dial to read 1600 (or perhaps
higher). Manually meter the scene for ambient light (which would of course
give you underexposure). Then shoot your picture with TTL flash (i.e.,
flash set on AUTO). The flash by itself will give an underexposed
foreground. The long exposure time that you've set in manual mode will
finish exposing the foreground to the proper final density, and will give
you a somewhat underexposed background. If I understand correctly, I think
this is what you want.
I remember seeing a picture just like this in my MZ50 owner's manual. It
wasn't a nightclub, but rather a woman standing in front of a window, with a
twilight scene outside the window. TTL flash gave proper exposure for the
woman in the foreground, and the long manual exposure time gave proper
exposure for the twilight scene outside the window.
It's funny, though -- I was thinking you could set exposure comp in one of
the modes, and the body would remember your setting if you switched over to
manual mode. Guess I'll have to look at the owner's manual again.
