This may or may not be of help. I once had an MX that had this fault: the
shutter release, as you know, is 2-stage meaning that on first
depression the meter is activated (and therefore the LEDs), and on final
depression, the shutter is released. With the manual wind-on lever in a
stand-off position, the meter can be 'clicked on' with that initial first
depression, and it stays on, until either the shutter is fully pressed to
take the pic, or the wind-on lever returned to full resting position. Now
with the shutter release lock 'on' no metering should be possible because
the button is physically locked. However, the microswitch inside, or
rather the contacts for it can operate incorrectly. The result is that
even with the shutter release locked, pressure on the release button
activates the lever - and of course the LEDs.
This happened to me, with the result that I kept finding flat batteries -
why? Because the camera body - rarely used - resided in a (n)ever-ready
case and that had been pressing on the shutter release! At least, this is
the only explanation I could come up with.
The only other possibility is that you have a short inside the camera
somewhere causing a discharge. A proper electrical check will easily
reveal that.
