Gerald,
I purchased Picture Window Pro 2.5 a few months ago, and I really like it.
It's quite popular with astrophotography enthusiasts -- in fact, the first
written description I ever saw of this product was in Sky & Telescope
magazine. Like you, I'm unable to justify $600 for the cost of a complete
Photoshop package. I found Picture Window to be very intuitive and easy to
use, and a bargain at $90. I'm certainly not a sophisticated digital
imaging software user, but I was able to get up and running after going
through their short tutorial. I haven't used Photoshop, so I don't have a
good reference point against which to compare Picture Window. Most useful
advice I can give is to download and install the evaluation package, go
through the tutorial, play around with a few of your own scanned images,
then go back to the Digital Light & Color web site and read their in-depth
"white papers" on some of the more advanced program features, tips and
tricks, etc. Their white papers are at the following URL:

Good luck!
