There's supposed to be a spring-loaded ball bearing in there
that clicks into detents inside the aperture ring. The ball
bearing is missing. Don't know how this could happen.

Yep.

That's because you're looking for something that isn't there
(the ball bearing that's missing).
It's a relatively easy fix as long as you haven't also lost the
spring that applies the tension to the ball bearing.
You need to find a ball bearing of approximately 1.5mm diameter.
I once used a 1.1mm bearing from an extra heavy line ballpoint
pen. It worked but was noticably smaller than the original.
(Most medium-point ballpoint pens have 1.0mm bearings, which are
too small.)
