Hi wieland, it's not so much a problem but rather different design goals.
The primary goal of the Z-1p is to be a good AF body. Hence, it dispels
with MF design considerations such as microprism split-center focusing
aids; the viewfinder of the Z-1p is a "natural bright matte" throughout.
However, it's the relatively low magnification (0.8x) that I notice the
most. Compared to the ME Super, the image appears smaller and this makes
it harder for me to focus manually.

By the way, you will notice these characteristics with most modern AF
bodies.

The in-focus indicator is tied into the AF system. It lights up in the
viewfinder when the AF system determines that the subject is in focus (the
body also makes a beeping sound but I have disabled that on mine). It is
active even when you a have manual focus lens attached to the body so you
can use it to verify your focusing.

The AF assist beam is a red light that is projected from the body to help
the AF system work in low-light situations.

It is a great body. I don't regret getting mine.

Gerald
