Rec.food.cooking had a real catfight over the exact composition of "methlated spirits" a few weeks ago. I learned something: it is a mixture of methyl and ethyl alcohols. It is not pure methyl alcohol, nor is it ethyl alcohol denatured with a dash of methyl or other unsavory substance. Speaking of cements, perhaps I can get some advice. I have an oldish Vivitar lens. The knurled surface on the focus ring turns out to be some kind of rubbery plastic. It has lately split and come away from the smooth metal surface underneath in strips. Is it practical for me to cement it back on, or should I take it to a repair shop? If I do the job myself, what would be an appropriate cement to use? It appears that it was originally custom molded to exactly fit the metal surface, as there is no sign of any cement present. The lens is fully functional without without this plastic knurling, of course. -- Rodger Whitlock Victoria, British Columbia, Canada - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
