I doubt it. I think this is gonna be as good as it gets for Pentax 35mm
bodies. Quite clearly, this is an "advanced amateur" body. It's rugged,
stylish, and specs out very much like the Elan 7 (with the exception of the
ruggedness issue). BUT, it's really no F5/1V competitor nor does it quite
stand up to the AF specs of a Maxxum 7, F100, or EOS 3. 6 AF Points and not
one seems to billed as a cross sensor (although I could have missed it).
With a winder speed of 2.5, I wonder what it will be like in predictive AF
mode. My guess is that it drops down to 2 or 1.5 fps. I think that's good
enough for an advanced amateur class body but not quite up to the F100/EOS
3.
I don't think they're gonna make a higher end 35mm camera. In the interview
published in Practical Photography a few months ago, they intimated as much.
I recall that this body is to compete with the F100/EOS 3 class body, not
the F5/EOS 1v. If you're serious enough to spend that kind of money
($1500-2000) on a camera body, Pentax assumes you're gonna get a 645 (or a
6X7).
Overall, I like it. It's the coolest looking body I've seen a in a long
while. It specs out nicely and hopefully, the AF will be better than it
seems to be on paper. And THANK GOD they finally created a body with an
optional vertical grip & shutter release.
$699 or so at B&H sounds like a fair price to me.
