Indeed not. But the point, which I didn't make explicit, was that
winders in the old days could be taken off the camera and the camera
could be used without it. I don't know if this true of the FM3A, but
it is certainly true of the LX.

I missed out a step in the argument, as noted above. Those tiny
batteries are generally fine, but modern cameras with built-in auto
advance are powered by much larger batteries.

You're right, of course. It only matters in an emergency where it's
difficult or impossible to get new batteries. Planning is of the
essence if you're going into a place like that. I wouldn't use
crampons, harnesses and a rope to walk upstairs to bed, so most of the
time they're useless. On the other hand, if I wanted to climb the
Matterhorn I'd think seriously about taking some along*.
