Actually there is an AF assist beam in the body. At least that's where it
physically appears to be located. I don't understand exactly how it works
other than when the flash is up, and I'm in very low light, a red LED turns
on. I can actually see it on the subject I'm photographing. I assume the
AF uses this small additional amount of light to achieve focus.

Sure someone will give a more detailed explanation.

the AF assist beam is in the flash, not in the body. I have generally found
it to be useless...

I don't have an AF body. What is the "AF assist beam" exactly? How does it
work? Is it
included in all AF-bodies (Mz-3, 5N, Z1p)?

I am currently thinking about getting a new body. I have only MF lenses and
don't need AF.
But I like TTL-flash and spotmetering and several other things in the new
bodies enough to
take a new one into consideration. Is this reasonable? What to do? All
experiences
welcome!

Best wishes
