Great idea!!  I've seen these from time to time in amateur astrophotographs
which incorporate some terrestrial elements in the foreground -- someone
gets a long-exposure bulb shot of the night sky, then "paints in" foreground
objects (sides of hills, rocks, buildings, people looking through a
telescope, etc.) either with a laser pointer or a flashlight.  You should be
able to get some really nice effects.  If you stand off to the side of your
camera, you should be able to "paint" without getting shadows from the
tripod legs.  You can paint part of the shot from one side of the camera,
and perhaps the rest of the shot from the other side of the camera.  Let us
know how your experiments turn out.
