You lose all metering.

What blocks it is Nikon's marketing department.  The camera tries to talk
to the lens' internal chip, and if there comes no answer, the camera does
not meter.  Note that they COULD meter and provide center-weighted and
sopt-metering, but they chose not to support manual-focus lenses at all.
