I totally agree with this, totally....

Multi-point AF is designed to do this automatically. You can have the
camera choose the focus point automatically (often a hit & miss affair, and
take more time to fix the focus point on closer subjects), or choose the
focus point manually by way of wheel or joystick or whatever the camera
makers choose. But to me, the fastest way is above tried & true method Len
described. Instead of holding the camera stationary and choose the focus
point (multi-point AF), you move the camera first (ever so slightly) and
choose the focus point which is way faster in my case. You may note that a
lot of people who use the cameras with the latest multi-point AF system
often end up just locking the centre sensor, effectively negating the
usefulness of the multi-point system.
However, if you shoot a lot of fast moving subjects, the multi-point AF
system is probably the only way to go. For my style of shooting,
multi-point system sometime becomes too bothersome.

BTE, on Z-1p, there was a testing on its focus-lock ability on low EV, low
contrast object, and it exceeded all other brands of camera by wide margin.
People say that this was because of fast lens but of course the test was
performed using the same spec lens (such as 50mm/1.4 etc).
Unfortunately, I lost the info but could get it from my friend. If and when
I get it, i will post it.

Cheers,

Ken
