I'm sorta jumping in on the middle of this discussion of using "PZ"
series screens in the venerable LX. And I have no problem with it! Do it
myself. Wish they all fit in all and would not affect metering, but
that's not gonna happen.

The Pentax screens are coded by series, using the suffix. The prefix is a
description of the design.

The originals were for factory or authorized shop replacement, and had
none of these numbers or letters, only a Pentax part number.

The next series were defined by what was to become the prefix, sometimes
followed by a number if there were several variations of the same design.
In most publications, it looks like some numbers were skipped. I
attribute this to "special order" or "Special use" screens that were in
scientific and industrial versions of the catalog. These were known as
the "M" series screens, for the MX and any other -M camera that had
interchageable screens.

SA-1
SA-3
SB-1
SC-1 (Standard)
SD-1
SE
SG
SI

The next series was made for the LX. They tended to be a bit brighter
than the "M" series, and were siad to not be usable in MXs. Of course,
they can, but the metering system has to be adjusted to make up the
difference in brightnes. The MX measures it's light off the screens. The
LX does not, making the MX screens perfectly compatable with the LX.
Beattie Intensascreens were made for this camera as well. The screen code
was left the same for identical designs, and 20 was added to the suffix,
ie: SA-1 became SA-21. A new screen was a clear screen with crosshairs
for astrophotagraphy, the SD-11 for the LX. Being a clear screen, MX
metering would not work with that screen. My guess to that logic was that
adding 10 to the suffix meant it was the first of it's kind, and worked
with the MX and the LX..

SA-21 (normal lenses)
SA-23 (fast lenses (f:2.8~f:1.2)
SA-26 (for Tele lenses - 300mm or longer)
SA-32 (
SA-37 (special ALL microprism screen for Macro and older "dim" tele)
SB-21 (matte with split image only)
SC-21 (Standard - matte with microprism collar and split image center)
SC-26 (for Tele lenses - 300mm or longer)
SD-21 (Matte w/ crosshairs in a clear central spot)
SD-11 (clear w/ central crosshairs)
SE-20 (All matte w/ finer matte center circle)
SE-25 (for Tele lenses - 300mm or longer)
SG-20 (etched grid)
SI-20 (Image magnification scales)

The SF- series of cameras used the -40 series numbers, but only had two
screens besides the standard. These were the SG-40 and the SI-40, with
Grid and Image scales respectively.

The PZ-1 manual only mentions on the specification page that the
viewfinder screens are interchangable. Nothing else. But they in fact had
a complete series available. The -50 series.

The PZ-1p manual describes and shows drawing of the basic seven screens,
omitting some older designs, and adding some new.

FF-60 (matte with AF frame)
FG-60 (matte with grid and AF area)
FI-60 (matte with scales for magnification and AF area)
FK-60 (matte with "golden section" lines, milimeter markings, and AF
area)
FM-60 (Standard - Matte w/ panorama frame, spot metering circle and AF
area definition)
FP-60 (matte with panorama frame and AF area)
FS-60 (matte with spot metering circle and AF area)

And I'm sure there are many more if Pentax was queried about just what
was available "in toto." Pentax and other manufacturers don't want to
confuse the common man with all that is really available, in screens or
special accessories.

I will assume that the MZ-S will have a new series.

I imagine they would be the -80 series.

The older series should work with this MZ-S as it is said to have
standard off the screen metering and the PR says the screens would be
brighter still. So like with all the other models, these can be used, as
long as the ev corrections are made as appropriate.

Some info will disagree. I used the respective manuals, brochures and
Shipman's. Boz just collects info from everywhere about everything
