I'm interested to hear how you like using the 80-200/2.8 with a
2x teleconverter. I know TCs are generally not recommended with
zooms but I've broken that rule before and gotten away with it.
I'm very interested in this combo you used. Please comment.
Here is a description of the rig I used. Super Program/Motor
Drive A/2x-S converter/Tokina ATX/SD 80-200 f2.8 mounted to a
Manfrotto monopod. The Lens has a tripod mount, and that was the
attachment point. I was shooting Fuji 100 slide film, and gave
it +1 exposure compensation because of the preponderance of snow
in the scene. I was on aperture preferred automatic, with the
lens at f4. I have no idea what my shutter speed was because the
LCD readout stopped working, but it was likely in the vicinity
of 1/250 second.
A casual inspection under an 8x loupe shows pretty good
sharpness and contrast. I am pretty happy with the combination.
It makes a reasonable speed 160 to 400mm zoom lens with good
balance. I normally don't use zoom lenses, and up to now have
eschewed teleconverters in favour of just using longer
telephotos. I decided that in this instance, the flexibility of
the zoom was more important than optimal image quality (for
which I would not have used 35mm anyway), and I really needed
the longer reach than the zoom lens alone.
All things are a compromise, but this one was, at least, a
successful one.
Thanks
