The biggest reason to have one is for family pictures in photo
albums.  It's nice to chronicle the events in the lives of our
family and be able to know the exact date the pictures were
shot.  We could always write the date on the back of the picture
but it's easier (and more sure) to let the camera do it.  There
are still people around that start a roll in one month and
finish it several weeks, or months later.

If you've ever worked as a private detective, it's also great
for evidence shots where you want to show when people were at
specific places.  Divorce cases come to mind.
