Wayne, I briefly owned the XR Rikenon 28-100. I'm sure it was made by Ricoh; there is no "other-brand" equivalent, be-it third-party or Pentax. Very well made, beautiful purplish coating. But it was a 2-touch design, which made it slow to use (for me). I took only about six shots with it, but wasn't impressed by its sharpness or contrast. You give up a lot of close focus at the 28mm end. I had the chance to compare it side by side with Pentax's 28-135/4 PKA, and they were so similar in size and weight that you might as well treat yourself to the 28-135.
My collected comments: "A metal-barrreled beauty," wrote Pop. Photography (July 1995), discontinued by then. All-black. A nice range; possibly an alternative to Pentax SMC-A 35š105 f/3.5 constant or SMC-A 28-135 f/4 constant. I have a jpg photo of it printed out in my zoom files from Brad's website that advertised it. Raimo Korhonen wrote: Pop Photo has tested the Rikenon in February 1984 issue - it seems to be OK in the center but not so good in the corners at 28 mm and 100 mm. ... The reviewer said he liked it."
