Pentax would have had to never market the M42 mount then, but have gone straight into bayonet instead. I'm not so sure if Nikon became the system of choice for working pros because of the F mount, or for some other reason. It may have had to do with the superiority of the Nikon F camera. Or, it may have been a marketing coup.
