IMHO, all scanners produce slightly soft images from the raw scans. That is
why they invented "sharpen" and "unsharp mask". :)

My technique is to scan at a resolution and size at least double my intended
presentation size. I edit at the scanned resolution to keep as much
information as possible, and then as a last step reduce the image size. The
reduction, if done properly by your photo editing program will increase the
sharpness somewhat, but a little bit more unsharp mask or sharpening will
make it look better. Too much unsharp mask is bad.

I've taken the liberty of editing a couple of jpg from your sight, to show
you what your images could look like with a little more practice on editing.
I think they look markedly better, even though I didn't have the original
TIFFs to edit.

What do you think?

I might have sharpened "waiting" a little too much, but it was hard working
with the original jpg as a less than ideal source.

I only made a couple of quick edits using Picture Windows Pro 3.0. The
first one was to adjust the black level using "curves" in PWP3, which is
equivalent to "levels" in Photoshop 5. The second item was to increase the
saturation a little to add more punch to the colors. With PWP3, I have a
histogram for saturation, so it is easy to tell when I've added too much,
but with Photoshop 5, there is just the slider, so you'll have to just look
at it to see how much saturation increase is needed.

The last thing I did was to set the gamma to 1.4, which seems best with
monitors these days. I don't know how to do that in Photoshop 5, but PWP3
makes it pretty simple.

Cheers,
Gerald
