I finally tried this. I bought my MZ-S in June of 2002 from B&H. I sat there last night dry-firing the camera but I just couldn't feel any change in the resistance of the shutter release. On the other hand, I've never had any problem using the AF without firing the shutter since the release has plenty of travel. I can see how some might say the release has too much resistance. I suspect I use the visual/tactile feedback from the lens/focus indicator. I have had some accidental firings, but those were my fault, e.g., camera set on MF and I'm trying to get it to AF.
