Don't ever use vaseline. It's too easy to transfer it to the
equipment.
Stretch a peice of black nylon (stocking material is good, and
usually free). If it's not soft enough loosen it. If its a bit
too soft, burn a hole in it with a cigarette.
If you are shooting colour, then use a taupe coloured material.
Warms things up quite nicely.
