I've had great results with my baby using a black tablecloth as a
background.  We dress her in a light colored outfit which helps her stand
out from the back drop.

Skin color may also influence choice of back drop as well.  My daughters are
almost translucent, and I like the way the black background contrasts with
their light skin.
