Thanks a lot everyone who replied to my questions. I may have been too hasty in my first judgement on the scanner software. Later tests and work indicate that it performs better or very well on other films, other than the first ones I tried out (which I noticed were some "No brand" 400 ASA, cheapest film in town). Also, this film was developed at the newspaper. While I haven't really noticed anything wrong with their chemistry, I don't know for sure whether it is being run under the same control as in commercial labs. Any, or both of these facts may have had something to do with my first sligthly sceptical impression of the performance of the scanner.
(There was also this "Manual Setup" (Ctrl-Shift-"I") that I ran which corrected some really weird colour "inbalancies" that started to appear.) Anyway, if any of you guys happen to notice prices at which it is being sold or advertised on the net, I would still welcome some more comments on that.
