Paul,
The only reason that paper manufacturers recommend tungsten lighting is
because of the variable contrast grades and filters, which were set up and
tweaked for the color temperature of the tungsten bulb light source. It
really has nothing to do with fiber or RC.
You can go ahead and use any RC or fiber, graded or variable contrast
paper you want with cold light. The difference will be that the color
temperature of the bulb will yield slightly different results with printing
filters as compared to a tungsten source. You will still get 5 full grades
of contrast with variable contrast filters, but you will probably find that
overall, you are about 1 grade lower in contrast as compared to tungsten.
You can adjust your film exposure and film development to suit that. Also,
you may not get exact 1/2 stop increases with each filter, it may 1/4 and
then 3/4, and that may vary a little. But I've not had a problem with it.
In years past, many cold light heads were too Blue/Green, and yielded
too much contrast. But manufacturers like Artisto recognized that and
changed the color of their cold light sources to better suit variable
contrast papers. So if you are thinking about buying a cold light head, I
would highly suggest you buy a new one, as opposed to a used one.
Thanks,
Ed
