Steve may be basing this statement on a test that I conducted with my older,
single-coated Vivitar 135/2.3 in M42 mount. Compared to my SMC 135/2.5K, it
delivered about a half-stop faster shutter speed at every aperture.

I held onto my SMC just long enough to run the same test against my
135/2.3K. Alas, the multicoating evened the game: the two K lenses yield the
same shutter speeds.

The multicoating evened the game??? It should be the contrary. Multicoating should have bettered the quantity of light entering the lens.
