   Alan, I'm afraid you got it all wrong. The MZ/ZX series has *not* a
unitary layout and operation mode. The only ones with traditional
approach are MZ-3, 5N, 5 and M.
   On the other side, several sources including a fotomagazin
disassembling report suggest the MZ cameras share important parts like
chassis, shutter, motor, mirror assembly and flash. 2 segment meter is
common for MZ-50 and MZ-M, while the rest have the same 6 segment.
The pentamirror is the same from MZ-M to MZ-7. All but MZ-30 and MZ-50
have slight variations of the same SAFOX IV autofocus system.
  The better reliability of Pentax entry level cameras compared to all
others also confirm these have common parts with MZ-3/5N. There's also
substantial speculation this is how Pentax achieved lower factory
costs and thus higher profits.
