Matrix seems to have the same design. But alghoritms could be different.
MZ-S could have more light/shadow patterns stored in metering system memory.
In Z-20 there were stored "thousends" of these situations (according to
Hnecke - "Z-20 Laterna Magica"). I suspect, that with every new model there
could be stored more and more patterns, that will cover more difficult
lightning situations. I have shot few rolls of unforgivable Velvia 50, and
must say that percent of badly exposed frames was about 10 - here it was my
mistake - I should use spot metering/bracketing + own metering system (my
brain :-) My former body - Z1P has had tendency to slightly overexpose
slides - MZ-S does it exactly (almost) as I want...

Both systems use pattern similar to sensitivity zones of human's eye (unlike
Canon and Minolta - they both use regular pattern dividing picture in 14-35
the same size and shape zones). Nikon works essentially the same way as
Pentax meter - it uses database of many thousends light/shadow situations
and compares it to current readout. Then it sets accordingly shutter or
aperture. "3D matrix metering" is promoted as the one using distance info to
provide more precise results. But since all Pentax AF lenses (both older
SMC-F and new SMC-FA) provide distance information for bodies, Pentax
meterig could use this information too, but as usual you can not find any
information in Pentax marketing materials (as usual). In fact I haven't even
find info how exactly Pentax matrix metering works, until I have Hnecke
book (anyway great book, it's a pity it is not available in English, and the
last on of this serie was written for MZ-5 as I rmember...)
