Mark, My understanding is that it is a no-no. Different voltage level. The manual is quite clear on alkalines or lithiums. Personally, I've found the battery consumption quite reasonable so that I don't feel frustrated by replacing the batteries. I've got lithiums in mine right now. Not really that expensive and they are lighter.
