>I have several sets of NIMH batteries that I use in the digital camera and

also in flashes. I don't know what the difference is, but in my digital
camera the NIMH batteries last at least 5x longer than alkalines. But in
flashes, a fresh set of NIMH are not noticeably better than fresh
alkalines. I'm not sure why the NIMH last longer - I assume it has
something to do with how the devices draw current from the batteries. But
that made me wonder if the Mz-S might get more life out of a NIMH set.<

depends on the digital camera too. Olympus ones of a few years ago required
the full 1.5V to operate and NiCD and NiMH batteries went below that after
a dozen shots or so. the battery indicator immediately said low battery.
the digital cameras designed for the lower operating voltage last far
longer on a set of NiMH. my Nikon 950 specifically said NiCD or NiMH and
ran easily 3 or 4 times longer on a set of NiMH compared to alkalines.
since you live in the US and consume batteries fairly steadily, Radio Shack
is a reasonable place to go. they have enough of a turnover rate that their
batteries are fresh on such a popular size.
