IIRC, current Nikon lenses would require a coupling prong installed in order to function with the non-AI mounts found on pre-1977 Nikon cameras (F, F2, Nikkormats, etc.)

In a mechanical sense they do: you can directly attach a 2003 AF-S/D/G/VR Nikkor lens to a 1959 Nikon F without using an adapter, wrench, hammer, milling machine or hammer. You can't do that with a K mount lens and a Spotmatic.
