>It started me wondering about going digital with just scanning slides...
>If I developed my own film and scanned the results I'd be in control from >beginning to end, after all. BTW - Do film scanners also scan unmounted >slides? The default is usually that they do scan unmounted slides. Best kept in strips and put in the film holder provided. Occasionally a scanner does not have provision for mounted slides but this is unusual. >A friend was telling me to develop it you stick it in a cannister and >slosh it around with some chemicals. LOL. A local brewery does exactly that ;-) Essentially you are correct, but as William Robb pointed out, the sloshing bit is extremely difficult to achieve satisfactorily in order to obtain consistent results. >1. Is a dark room necessary? One of the bathrooms here could probably be >darkened up satisfactorily. I don't do slide film (also known as 'reversal' film in some areas) but I do develop B+W neg using a bathroom at night to load the film onto the spirals and put them in the tank. But it must be so dark that you cannot see anything even after letting your eyes acclimatise (acclimate) for ten mins. A purpose-made film changing bag can be used. I wouldn't advise making your own although it is entirely possible. After the light-tight lid is on the tank, the rest is done in normal light (well it is with neg - I assume it is with slide film) but maintaining correct temp is more crucial with slide AFAIK. >2. Do the chemicals have to be at some certain (hard to reach) cold >temperature? Or is this not a major problem? What chemicals are needed? Not hard to reach, but hard to maintain over a period of even a few minutes without special measures. It can be a major problem. >3. Is that all there is to it? Cannister, chemicals, and sloshing? ;-) And a whole lot of knowledge. William is right. Get your slides done at the lab, then scan them. You're now one step away from going the whole hogg and shooting digital :-) Cotty ____________________________________ Free UK Macintosh Classified Ads at http://www.macads.co.uk/ ____________________________________ Oh, swipe me!
