As a matter of pure aesthetics I'd think print dimensions would follow Golden Rectangles, known since ancient Greece to be pleasing to the eye. The golden ratio is (1+sqrt(5))/2 ~= 1.6, and 36mm/24mm and 6in/4in=1.5, which is pretty close. 12in/8in=1.5, but 10in/8in=1.25, farther from the hypothetical ideal. Just a thought.
