Yes, if you see the MZ-S as a replacement model for the Z-1p - which it is not.
No, if you see the MZ-S as an autofocus replacement model for the LX - which it seems
to be.

Is it?
It may have 1/6000 top speed instead of 1/8000, and standard X sync may not be faster
than 1/180 - but, and this is an important but:
* It's built to last - with an extremely reliable construction (magnesium, sealed
against dust and moisture) and electronics.
* It has a shutter that can cope with 100 or more rolls a week, 12 months a year.
* It has retained the custom functions of the Z-1p, and added some nice extras (like
metering coupled to selected focus point on/off).
* It has an advanced data imprinting.
* It has HyperModes (or HyperOperation) much in the same way as the Z-1p, except that
the user has to move the aperture ring to A.
* It has 6-point autofocus, while the Z-1p has only one.
* It has the program modes of the Z-1p (action, depth-of-field, MTF and standard
program).
* It's smaller and lighter than the Z-1p (despite a more solid construction)
* It has a socket for PC studio flash.
Compare this to the Contax N1, which cost twice as much as the MZ-S. You don't get
better build quality with Contax or Leica.
The N1 only has 1/125 standard flash sync (1/250 with special dedicated flash).
No high-speed flash sync.
No HyperOperation (but it do has a clever combination of traditional shutter- and
aperture dials with multi-function dial).
It's big and bulky
And the glass is much, much, much more expensive (and there's only four of them too!
24-85, 70-300, 50 f/1.4 and 100 f/2.8 Macro).
Still, the N1 is rated "professional" (actually, all products from Contax seems to be
rated "professional", they simply has a great image and knows how to charge for it...)

Probably on it's way soon...

I strongly believe that Pentax is working on a MZ-3 and Z-1p replacement model, to fit
the quite big gap between the MZ-5N and MZ-S.
Probably with more plastic to lower build cost, perhaps with 1/8000 shutter but with
some of the features from the MZ-S removed (no PC flash etc.).
Personally, I would love a MZ-3 with true chrome metal instead of the silver painted
plastic, and...
* Cross sensor autofocus
* Multiple exposure
* PC flash socket
* High-speed flash sync (1/4000)
* Action, MTF and DOF program lines (selectable with an easy switch)
* Option of having the film leader out (a small button at the left side perhaps?)
Of course at a lower, or similar price, as the Nikon F80.
Now, that's a camera I would buy!
Best regards,
Roland
